16-bit image rendering in HW render not working

In Maya 2018 (and 2017) I am trying to do a HW render to a 16-bit image format with no luck.  All attempts to do so yield 8-bit images.  I figure this is so basic, I must be doing something wrong.

1) Open Render->Render Settings

2) Set "Render Using" to "Maya Hardware 2.0"

3) Set "Image format" to "Maya 16 IFF" or "TIFF 16"

4) Make sure that "Floating Point Render Target" is enabled (I assume this is needed)

5) Render->Render Current Frame

6) Inspect resultant file... it is only 8-bits.

I similar behavior with just "Maya Hardware"

"Maya Software" does give 16-bit images.

Hi!

Please report this problem (bug?) to Autodesk.
Help -> Speak Back -> Report a Problem

Workaround: Use EXR as file format (it seems that 16 bit setting there is also ignored and always outputs 32 bit)
