Renaming geometry including assigned material / texture names

Hi folks,

I'm working on a project that requires that each geometry node in the outliner be named very specifically, in order to have the ability to change the assigned texture (not just the materials, but the texture associated with the material) on the fly in Nuke.

 

Does anyone know of a way to add a suffix that calls the name of the texture assigned to the material and appends it to the end of the geo node name?  For example:

 

Poly name in the outliner is "thing_right_A".  The assigned material is named thingRightAColor.  It's a basic Lambert shader with the color piped to a texture called thingRightAColor.png.

 

So, ultimately, I need the renaming script to be able to update the poly node name with the suffix "__thingRightAColor"  It doesn't need to add the .png extension.

 

Is this possible?
