What OS are you working on? If windows 7, OSX or Linux, I recommend updating to 64-bit. Most of the binaries available for PyQt4 are all 64-bit. The 32-bit versions you may need to build the binaries yourself.

http://nathanhorne.com/?p=183Now I should caution you, you are working outside the "default" installation of maya. You may, by working this way, stomp on maya's memory allocations. However, in my experience as long as you use the same version of QT and Python the autodesk maya used for deployment you should in theory be fine.
Additionally, there is not much documentation on this because it appears to me autodesk maya has decided to do things there own way.
