Playblasting using mayapy.exe

Hi there,
this question has been asked a couple of times before, however, I haven't been able to find a way around it. I'm trying to run the playblast command in mayapy.exe but only receive a black screen. When I run it on a scene that's already been lit, I get a black-and-white video that roughly shows what is on the screen, yet no shading and texture are visible. it's as if a white light is shining in a dark room and anything on its way lights up.
I've tried changing display preferences to generate UV tile previews upon loading the scene but its value does not change. It also seems that no lights are loaded on the screen either. Some of these options are related to viewport which does not load in mayapy so changing them makes no sense. But certainly there have to be other options.
Does anyone know if there's a way to do this thing? Just a simple blast with ambient light suffices here! Thanks in advance.
