Best practice for selecting objects?

Im running into some 'more than one object matches name' problems with cmds.select(....) right now and I was wondering what the best practice was for tackling that problem. Usually I would just make sure that the scene was constructed properly but in this case tats out of my hands and i cant ensure that this will always be the case, does anyone have any thoughts on the subject

unless you know the full path to the objects, next bet is to select all of them.
for example;

scene with 2 'pSphere1' in root and in 'group1'.
To select them both...

mc.select('*|pSphere1')
