Ball roation rig?

I am trying to rig a sphere that rotates in the direction it is moving. I did a tire rig once before but that only rotates when moved in one direction. I dont know if this will work but I figure if I do that for each axis to three controllers and parent those controlers to one master it could work. If anyone knows a better way of doing I am open to suggestions.
My main question:
Is there a way to get the scale of an object, more specifically the diameter of a cylinder or sphere through MEL? Currently I use te distance tool to get it and most tutorials online do it that way, but I wanted to know if is there a simpler way to get the scale of a peice of gemotery and apply it to a variable?
