So I'm at a loss here. I was generating hair descriptions using guides in Maya 2018 just fine, until I start on my final description and suddenly no preview hairs are generated (Generate Primitives set to Random Across Surface). I set the Log warnings up to level 3 and I get this Warning, dozens of times over (I'm assuming each warning line is generated for each preview hair that it tries and fails to generate):
// Warning: line 1: XGen(3): No guides within reach of point on patch polySurface16[12]. Primitive (or clump guide) culled. [ -22.744596 3.392391 -13.521679]
Also for some reason now I can't paint any mask on the base mesh for this description (a simple card with a basic UV layout). If I try to create a map, the Mask slot goes blank and no map is saved. My project is set and all the other descriptions have their own density masks painted and saved within the project folder, but this one refuses to cooperate.
I've tried resetting preferences, and even reinstalling Maya 2018, and the issue persisted.
So then I installed Maya 2019 with all updates and tried on a fresh scene and I get the same problem: no hairs are generated using guides, and the same warning pops up.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I can't find any information about this warning/error in Maya's documentation and what few other posts there are regarding this in these forums remain unresolved.
