Wrap image on cylinder

Ok, this one is driving me NUTS!  I created a simple cylinder, but I can't get my image to wrap around it properly, no matter what I do.  I've tried planar, cylindrical & automatic, all to no avail.  The image keeps getting repeated, and I only want it once.

I used a soda can file, but the soda can is the wrong shape; I just want a simple cylinder.  I looked around for soup (or vegetable) cans, but there aren't any free models out there.  Can anyone help me?

Go into the UV editor and make sure your UV is only in the upper right quadrant...and scaled properly.

Ok, I found the UV editor... and my image top is beyond the top of the window.  I don't know how to scale it in this window.  Also, there are some white lines I don't understand.  How exactly do I do this??

You should take a step back and learn what UVs are and how they interact with your model and why.  Then you will understand what you have to do.

That tutorial wasn't helpful at all.  Actually, this one: https://youtu.be/c_eoYuA-SP0 was.  It showed unwrapping a cylinder.  With that, I was able to figure out how to resize the uv properly, and now it wraps my cylinder perfectly.

Sorry about that.  I was so excited about getting it to work that I forgot to say : "Thank you so much!"  The first video was a good overview of UV's, and I *DID* learn a lot... but the subsequent video (the one I posted) gave much more concrete instructions to unwrapping a cylinder.

Thanks, everyone!

Yeah, I was just showing you the amount of video tutorials that were at your disposal.

You should really go through every component of Maya and learn it.  Then when you get to that point in your project...you'll be like......I know how to do this....instead of ....hey..how do I do this...what is wrong here...
