Temporary Pivot Point?

Hi all, i just wondering if in Maya, like in Softimage, there is a way to move the pivot of an object in a temporary way, so when i deselect that object, the pivot point return in the defaul position.

dont know how it works in softimage exactly but pressing the "d" key while in move, rotate or scale tool should do the job!

The pivot point doesn't spring back to the original location afterward though...

Only thing I can think of would be to group the object, and then move the pivot point of the group where you want (original object will retain it's pivot point).

omg n8skow you are right. never realized that it only works in component mode that it snaps back or lets say centers again between selected components.

would have bet that it has worked as temp movement of the pivot...seems i`m getting old:(

We've established how to move the pivot point, the 2nd part of the question is how to have it snap back to the original position afterward though...

Would be nice to have it snap back when using move/scale/rotate

Hi,

When working with objects the move tool will always modify the transform's pivot. (unlike Softimage where you can choose to modify the pivot or use a temporary pivot)

Hit center pivot again it will go back to its original place.

After I do that, the animation that was done from the temporary pivot is
changed to originate from the original pivot, thus losing the work I did
from the "temporary" pivot.

Now plan B. Select the object and GROUP it to itself by pressing ctrlG or
go to edit group. Now you will have a top node and the cylinder will become
a child of that group. So it will retain its own pivot. Now you do the same
as before to the group, that is change the pivot.

I'm very late to this discussion, but there is nothing similar to 3dsmax where you can set it to use another object's pivot point?

When i want to move an object temporarily, I move it to the location i want it to stay, freeze transforms, then move it to the temporary location do whatever it is i need to do. I then zero out and that will move the object back to its original location. This is a great method for using objects as guides or reference without having to remember where they belong. Alternatively, you could also copy the transforms to a text doc move stuff around and copy it back.
