Soften Edges Looks Like Melted Wax

I noticed this happening recently where I would import a model as an FBX (because it's made up of multiple objects) from ZBrush, and when I used soften edges the result looks like melted wax. This doesn't happen if I import the objects individually as obj's and then soften though.

I'm hoping someone could shed some light on why this happens. Surely in cases of working with modular objects the workflow would be more efficient to import the parts together rather than individual objects.

Are you sure the normals are unlocked?

Yup that did it, thank you. But why would I have to unlock the normals for an fbx file type and the obj is fine? Just seems weird.
