Soft normals aren't actually soft

Hi Everyone,
I need the vertex normals on my model to be totally smooth, as in exactly halfway between the adjacent faces because that's what the game engine I'm using does (Unity) and that's the only way to bake the normal maps to look right. However when I smooth normals in maya there are many areas where the vertex normals favor one face over another. Is there any way to get truly soft normals in Maya or another program if necessary?

"truly soft" is maybe not the real name but here are some options how to calculate vertex normals in Maya:

Vertex Normal Method (restart of Maya needed, this also affects  already created nodes in history and maybe change the look of a scene):
