Smoothing Artifacts

Hi,

I'm a beginner at modeling. 

I noticed it seems fine when I select a face in rough mode, but the edges that corresponds to the face becomes jumbled in medium and smooth mode.

Is this normal? Or what am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure if this is a definitive solution for others who may seem to have the same problem (It could be a matter of preference settings). But after tracing back my steps, it became evident that the distortion began when I started deleting faces in smooth mode instead of roughly display.
