Shift extrude not working

Hello.

Shift drag extrude/inset stops working when I am modeling with a plane primitive. The problem is solved when I clean the history, but after a few seconds it stops working again and I have to clean the history every few seconds.

Hi,

I would suggest using 3D symmetry (e.g. Object X) instead of topological symmetry for modeling.

Topological symmetry is more useful for tweaking meshes where the left and right are not mirror images of each other (e.g. a posed character) but can fail if you make edits that affect the edge you selected for symmetry. I suspect that is what is happening in your scenario.

Hard to tell from your screencast alone, as you don't have construction history exposed, HIK panel doesn't help much.

Does traditional (from the Shelf or the Menu) Extrude behave similarly?

I usually struggle to remember to disable this Shift-extrusion, as it might happen accidentally, thus I have no positive xp with it.

In any case, the screencast shows many seemingly irrelevant hotkeys pressed, check if those aren't damaged.

Also, it might not be enough to just delete the construction history, which still is the safest way to restore tools expected functionality. Check the geo on its integrity Mesh>Cleanup, as with too sensitive hotkeys you can run into non-manifolds pretty rapidly.

It does the same thing with any version of symmetry, object x, world x, does not matter, this video I captured it with my phone - extrude sign is clearly visible during operation, but it does not work. If I clear history it works for a little while and then stops working again.

Hello, screen cast is doing strange things too, so I captured with my phone, you can clearly see extrude sign, that I am indeed pushing correct buttons, the problem is on the software's side.

Ok, I see the issue. The whole object is scaling.

What is the axis-orientation mode set to in the scale tool?

Hi! I have same problem in Maya 2024. Do you found fix for it?

Hi. There is no fix for it. It's a modeling feature that was initially introduced broken many years ago and has never been fixed since, despite all the bug reports. Seems like it's a matter of principle for Autodesk to never fix it, they probably think that too much comfort may spoil a person and leave this feature broken probably on purpose. So, I suggest you look for some workarounds. Make an instance, align it, then merge verteces, all that headache  Or change a modeling software alltogether as a better solution.
