Several bugs with Maya 2023

I know this version just released and expected some bugs, but not at the base level of kits. Some of my favorite go to tools just do not work. More specifically, anytime a model is instanced, a lot of tools become unusable. I'll just give a very brief list of things I've stumbled across:

Target weld - will not work on instanced objects

Marquee (Perspective View / Instanced Only): will not select any vertices, but will select faces and edges.

Vertex snapping: Will only snap to desired vertex (V) if automatic camera-based selection is active; possibly the most frustrating so far.

There are other random tools that pick and choose when they want to work while a model is instanced, but its so random that I cant quite list them because at this point idk if its the tool or the instanced object. I've started new scenes with simply a box to recreate (just to see if it wasnt just my model) the 3 that I've list above this paragraph and they definitely reoccurred.

The vertex snapping is already logged by Autodesk and is under investigation.

I can't check the other issues yet  but thanks for the report.

A bug I ran across seems to be with the units in settings. I built a stadium to scale working in feet. my work flow would be to change it to centimeters in settings, and export to fbx then to unity so it comes in at 1 to 1. when i brought stadium into 2023. the grid for the units in feet is really tiny. not the same any more. if I scale down to match the grid the geometry is small in unity....so the geometry is exporting correctly but the scale of the grid is not displaying correctly.

I seem to be having an issue with the Curves drawing where I try to draw the curve, and no matter what even though the setting has it be drawing in all dimensions it stays flat mostly staying flat. The other issue is having issues with the EP curve tool where it won't work unless I am in a fixed panel. I hope these bugs are addressed soon I do like making 3d models using this software.

Hi I think I may have fixed an issue I was having with my instanced object and target weld. It wasn't working for me either but once I toggled the axis to normals then back to parent it started working again.

I recently made a post about the Target Weld bug with instances which I've noticed since I updated to 2023.2 (didn't do a lot of modelling in previous versions of 2023 to see if the bug has always been in 2023). It's disappointing to see this has been an issue for several months now and hasn't been fixed. Has anyone found a solution or workaround? Changing the axis orientation didn't work for me. Any help is much appreciated since Target Weld and instances are both essential aspects of my modelling workflow.

This is a joke. So now I need to downgrade in order to get back basic functionality? I can't even find how I can officially report these bugs to the Maya team. Maybe it really is time to switch to Blender...

Until Autodesk addresses the Target Weld bug, I highly recommend malcolm341's weld scripts as a workaround. In some ways, these scripts are even better than Target Weld and I'm glad I discovered them. They're paid scripts but the price is modest. I guess it's up to the community to keep Maya in working order.

Still present in Maya 2024.

hey guys, the target weld on instances issue is logged as MAYA-122658
Can any of you try using target weld while in wireframe mode and see if it works for you. Shaded display mode is broke but I can get it to work in wireframe mode (NOTE: I am on Mac). Something to try. We are looking at the other issues expressed in this post.

rpruittPEX2T,

Curve tool always project to a grid plane so if you try and draw it in a perspective viewport the results may be unpredictable because it will do it's best to project to the appropriate grid plane based on the camera angle. If the angle isn't deliberately looking down on the perspective grid, portions of the curve could get shot off into space.

Wow, that was a good tip! Not for the weld tool (I do have that issue to but don't have a scene to recreate the issue) but for the Connect tool it worked. It also works very strange after a boolean operation (normally you want to connect some verts after) and this solution made it work. I connect 2 verts in Wireframe mode, and then put it back into shaded mode, and the tool works fine again! Cheers!

I'm also having an issue with the Connect (verts) tool. After a boolean operation (normally you want to connect some verts after) and it just tries to connect many not selected verts around the model, creating weird triangulations everywhere. One solution that I found was to export the object and then re-importing it back- then the tool worked as intended.

I can confirm target welding points works on instances while in wireframe view in 2023. While not idea, this is at least a relatively painless workaround. Thank you for passing this along.

oh man another really BASIC bug, how did this make it to 2023.3 I thought the .3 versions are going to be super stable and production ready?

not needing mad new features just some bug fixes please
