Selecting vertices also selects other objects

Hi! My problem is already explained in the topic, but I also recorded a video showing the matter. I follow a tutorial in Udemy. I want to select only vertices of that cylinder, but it also selects the other cylinder - although I'm not in the object mode. I'm doing everything exactly like the instructor, but it selects ok for him. He uses Maya 2016, while I'm in Maya 2018.

I googled the problem and some people said selecting "Ignore selection priority" should fix this, but for me it doesn't.

I'll be grateful for some help!

Hi!

You are in object mode, you only changed selection for this particular object.

So use an other mode, hide objects you don't want to select, or just remove objects from selection (deselect) as last step.

Thanks for answering! The instructor doesn't hide other objects, neither locks them, yet the other cylinder doesn't get selected for him. If I'm in object mode, what mode is he in? I followed him step by step and I have no idea what I missed...

To clarify: I know I can hide other objects and then select vertices, but that's not the point. I want to be able to select vertices without hiding other objects, just like the instructor in the tutorial

EDIT: Here's a screenshot to the said tutorial. He just selected all these vertices with no additional things.maya.png

Hi!

Change global selection mode.

Please read the Maya Online Help / Documentation for more details.

Thanks, I read and watched it. However, no matter what I do, which mode I'm in, I still select the other objects. 😞 I have no idea why it happens to me, but not on the tutorial, even though I'm doing exactly same things. 😞

Hi!

You can't select objects if you are not in object selection mode, so you did not change selection mode.

Please record again a video when using mode "Select by Component Type".

Hi!

You changed the selection Priority for Polymesh in Preferences -> Settings -> Selection.

Choose one of the presets or try a reset of your preferences.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2018 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2018 to 2018_backup (or even the maya folder to maya_backup). Maya creates new folders (don't copy preferences from previous Maya versions). Detailed at:

Allright, all I had to do was changing the preset to "animation" and now it's working as supposed to! Thanks so much! 😄

Go to Preferences -  Settings - Selection ->>

Uncheck - Ignore selection priority

Hi! Try this script, maybe it will help you. It creates a layer and puts all objects in it except the selected one. https://github.com/SPluzh/MayaObjectComponentSelectionMode
