Was the Attribute Maps group removed from the Sculpt Tool in Maya 2016??
I watched a tutorial in which someone using a previous version of Maya used the Sculpt Geometry tool, expanded the Attribute Maps, and dropped in a height map to automatically generate a displacement mesh.
Now in 2016, te Sculpt Tool doesn't have this section anymore. The only way around it that I know is to use Displacement Map in the shader group, and then convert it to polygons.
Why would Autodesk remove the ability to use height maps in the Sculpt Tool? It was so cool and useful!

It's still there...they just moved it. What you want is the Surfaces->Sculpt Geometry tool. Open the settings of the tool to load an attribute map.
