Rules for adding subdivisions when creating new geometry

Hello everyone! I'm semi-new to modeling so I'm seeking out basic beginner advice. But here is a question I could not seem to find an answer to whilst searching the internet. 

 

I understand what a subdivision is, their uses, and how to add them to a newly created shape such as when you Create > Poly Prim > Sphere or Cube, etc.

 

But when attempting to model anything, let's say the scope of a rifle, how will I know how many subdivisions I should create before I start attempting to mold the geometry to my desired look? This is of course, assuming one should add subdivisions before they start modeling? Are there any rules of thumb that you follow? Should I always add an even number of Subdivisions? 

 

I understand, at least to some degree, that I should add as many as necessary for the amount of detail I might need. To this point, might there be a good number to estimate by, and what should that number be and why? Should I add more than what I think may be necessary, and can they be reduced easily later? Perhaps start with less subdivisions, and then add more as I need them?

Hi!

There are no rules.

- Experience.

- Yes i recommend this.

Only if you want to use Sculpting Tools a higher resolution is recommended (/ needed) to use these tools properly.
