Project deadline 2/16/18 - Move, scale, and rotate tools not working

I'm trying to complete an evaluation test that is due on 2/16/18 for possible employment with an animation studio, so the sooner I can resolve this issue, the better.

I'm using Maya 2016, not interested in updating to 2017 or 2018 at this time. The move, scale and rotate tools aren't working. The X, Y and Z arrows (move tool in this example) aren't highlighted when I put the mouse pointer on them. I've tried resetting all three of the tools, no change in the functionality.

This is the first time I've experienced a problem like this.

Maya 2016 had 4 or 5 service packs and 2 updates. Try installing them one at a time. When and if Maya start behaving, stop right there.

I looked into that method, it appears that for use that fix for a Mac I'd have to uninstall and reinstall Maya for each one of the 2016 service packs and updates. Do you think it would be less time consuming to just upgrade to 2018?

I went ahead & downloaded Maya 2018. You have to figure that any studio I get hired by would be using the most current version, anyway. Thank you for replying and offering the suggestions to correct my 2016 problem.

My opinion is that there is no good solution. What service pack are you running now? If you are running 2016 without a service pack, I would install at least the latest service pack for that version. Using ANY version of Maya without a service pack is masochism. You are throwing yourself to the lions. You are a beta tester for Autodesk without pay. After you have paid for the software. 2017 was a complete disaster as I am sure you know from everything said on the internet. 2018 promised that Maya would at least try to become a serious program again. That quickly proved to be as much of a joke as 2017. Stick with 2016 and install the latest service pack. You could also downgrade to 2010. The golden standard.

Shall we do a REFERENDUM and see what everyone else thinks?

I have not worked for any company that uses 2018 yet.... I have worked for only one company that used 2017 without the latest update and it was excruciating. Also I have to point out that I do not work in Maya on a Mac. Last time I worked in Maya on a Mac was an accident and it goes back many years.

I'm not very active on the forums, had no idea that 2017 AND 2018 were that bad! It looks like service pack six is the highest one. I'll try that before messing with Maya 2018 at all. Thanks again for the info!!

Maya 2016 was one of the few versions where 6(!) service packs had to be released to finally get it to perform somewhat predictably in production. 6 service packs is a LOT. But in the end, after the 6th service pack it was ok. That was not the case with anything released afterwards. 2017 it was one mess after the other. 2018 started OK according to some people, and once the updated starting rolling out, it all fell apart again.

Almost finished with the service downloads. The nice thing about the whole situation is, the contact person at the animation studio has been pretty understanding about the problem. I just need to let her know if this doesn't fix the problem so she can notify the people who are going to be reviewing my submission.

I hope everything works out for the best with the latest Service Pack in the current version you were using. Upgrading to any of the later versions mid project would be something that I am sure you would immediately regret.

It's still doing the same thing. The tools are visible, but I can't move, scale, or rotate even a simple polygon primitive sphere. This is ridiculous. I'm reluctant to try working in Maya 2018 based on your very poor opinion of it, but I might not have a choice.

Do not use Viewport 2.0. Use Legacy. Turn off Parallel Evaluation. Use DG Evaluation. You  might have to reset your preferences too. I know. It's ridiculous. Hopefully this will sort out all this Maya-ism at least long enough for you to finish your project.

Graphic driver update if worse come to worse.

Last option is upgrading to the other versions. But I think if you reach that point you are already screwed. Aren't we all?

Hi!

@Anonymous

1. Maya 2016 worked before and then suddenly transformation tools stopped working?

2. Please re-install or update your GPU driver (there where several reports that system updates can break it)

3. Try different Viewport modes (like DirectX).
