Problem with selecting multiple objects

Hello everyone, I have this problem:

I open maya and if I want to drag for select multiple objects is ok. I try putting multiple polygons and it seems to work. However, when I open another scene (one sended by my teacher or one of an anterior projects), If I want to drag and select multiple objects, maya kind of freezes for a few seconds. 

I found it very frustating because it affects my workflow, I don't know if it's because of my conputer or the software but this has never happened to me and I have been using the program for about 3 years.

Hope someone can help me and thanks in advance
