Problem with Mirror Geometry

Hi Folks, 

i'm working on a model for my main character and have just completed the rough outline of the  half body. So now i wanted to mirror it and then start extruding some edges going round the body to form the poncho/coat for my character. But when i want to extrude an edge that goes round the body it's right on the one side but has black faces on the other side of the body.

I have no idea where this is coming from.

And if u also have some tips on how to easier model the coat i would be very thankful.

I'll attach a screen and the scene to this post.

You might have reversed Normals in that area...a good help to see these problem areas is to keep under Panels-Lighting>Two sided lightinng  unchecked...that way Maya will show faces that are reversed in black....once you spot them, select the faces and go to Display >Normals Reverse.
