PolyDetail/PolyDamage-similar tools in Maya?

Hi everyone.

Just found these two awesome tools for 3dsMax online, ans was wondering if there is something similar available for Maya?

Thanks in advance!

It's easier to just buy the models already made or you can create your own with Substance Designer or sculpt them with alphas.

There's no script like this for Maya though.

Hi!

1. PolyDetail

Maya has brushes for sculpting included, so there is no need for this.

You can also get Mudbox for about 10$ per month.

2 PolyDamage.

You can do this also with the above mentioned tools, but a procedural texture would be more versatile (there are some included in Maya).

So there are no extra tools needed to do this in Maya.

I see...

Using a different software is indeed an option.

Thank you for your reply! 🙂

Thank you so much for your reply!

1. PolyDetail

I've had some reports from the BG artists in my company that Maya's sculpting tools are really heavy and unstable, making Maya crash, making it really difficult to use. Is this a common problem with a lot of people?

2. PolyDamage

I see! I will investigate this through the procedural textures, thank you for the advice. Also, as an alternative, I will try making some simple MEL coding to cover this to some point.

Thank you once again! 🙂

Hi!

1. PolyDetail

"I've had some reports from the BG artists in my company that Maya's sculpting tools are really heavy and unstable, making Maya crash, making it really difficult to use. Is this a common problem with a lot of people?"

I can't confirm this. There have been some bugs in previous releases for some of the brushes, but i did not hear of any problems for some time.

Mudbox as being a dedicated application will of course be a better choice.

2. Not sure what you want to do with MEL here, it's just a simple material network that's needed.

By using MEL, I meant actually "damaging" objects in the modeling phase, but instead of doing this manually, make it automatically generate a randomly damaged version of the object itself. Should this be avoided?

Hi!

If you want the damage to be modeled in the mesh you can do this and regardless of the solution you choose you can also create a script for an automated processing, there is nothing wrong with this.

I see!

I will talk with the BG artists and check what is the best option for them.

Thank you so much for your support! 🙂
