New to Maya! Weird topology when trying to make a hole for a circular button

Hey everyone, I'm trying to cut a hole out of a curved piece of metal. I try to use the Edit Mesh -> circularize on the curved metal to get the proper cut. However, when I do this and then scale the circularized vertices down, it creates this weird effect. Any ideas on how to avoid this?

Soften the other edges should do it. I assume they are hard.

Remember a circle shape is only circular when working with polygons if it has enough vertices/edges around the outline to support that level of detail.

The weird shape you are seeing is a circle, it's just a circle with 8 sides which will appear more angular.

Is the shape of the circle the weird effect you were asking about or is there something else in the screenshot you are referencing?
