Need help to model a crystal

Hello everyone! Just started to learn how Maya works and getting pretty used to it. However I need some tips to create more advanced stuff. One of these crystals, for example :

Any tips on how to get that kind of multi-layered, detailled look?

the best way, model this crystal, buy sculpting program like zbrush.
