Move tool not working properly

I have attached a video to explain myself better.

I was following a tutorial on cartoon character modelling. Everything was working well until I got to the modelling of the eye. I just noticed that the move tool movement is not proper in the x, y, and z directions. I wanted to do what the tutor did to adjust the vertice to match the eye reference. Everything works well in the tutorial I am following but it is not working well on my end. I noticed the change in the movement when I changed the axis orientation for move tool to "normal" just like the tutor said in the video at a point. Well, I don't know if I did or press another thing/icon/button which could have caused the problem.

I'm still new to Maya. I expect the X, Y and Z directions to be perfect in those directions and not bending or sort of. I hope you understand me.

Thanks.

If the axis orientation is set to normal, and its movement is wrong, then the normals might not be as they should be.

In this case I believe there is no problem at all moving the vertices with the World axis orientation!

Hello! What you are seeing is quite strange indeed. I watched your video, and usually the text under the move tool manipulator that says "slide" only shows up when you hold ctrl + shift (for doing a slide operation), so I'm wondering if something has gone wrong with the tool settings, or the mesh needs to be cleaned up. here's a few things to try:

1. reset the move tool.
with the move tool selected, go to Windows > General editors > Tool settings. This should open the tool settings (if they aren't already open). In there, try clicking the Reset tool button that can be found at the top right. If that doesn't fix it, try step 2.

2. Try deleting the construction history on your mesh.

I noticed you have a lot of construction history on your mesh. This can lead to all kinds of problems, and it's usually best to model with construction history turned off unless you need it on for a reason. First off, please try this step on a COPY of your file first! I don't want you to lose any work. Once you are in a copy of your file, to clean up the construction history on your mesh, just select your mesh while in object mode and then go Edit > Delete By Type > History. This will remove the history of all of the cuts, extrudes, moves, etc that you have done since you started modelling, and leave you with clean geometry.

Let me know if either of those work, and if not we can try some other things as well. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your response. The resetting solution worked. I also cleared the construction history. I have no idea about the construction history before. Now that I know, I will be clearing it to avoid error from that end.

Thanks again.

You're welcome! I'm glad that worked. As for the construction history, it's not a bad thing, it's just not needed if you don't have a reason for it. Construction history for objects in Maya is similar to the Modifier Stack in 3ds Max, but Maya's history isn't as robust or intuitive, and can sometimes cause problems here and there. It's rare, but it does happen.
