Maya Model in other programs

hi just had a question

i dont have a maya licence

i was modelling a human model in blender we'll call bob

bob was made entirely in blender

but during the modeling of bob i imported something i made in maya

i cant remember why

so this imported maya object we'll call frank

frank sort of sat there uselessly while i modeled bob

frank was soon deleted from the blender scene

and i was left with bob

bob was a human model made completely in blender that frank had nothing to do with

frank just pretty much sat there

my question is

if i import a maya object into a blender scene but delete it later

does that still make it so everything else in the blender scene is now illegal for me to use commercially?

althought bob was made in blender

do i now need a maya licence to use bob commercially just because frank was in the same scene for a few minutes?

if a maya object is in a blender scene but removed later

do my other blender models made in blender and blender alone

still need a maya licence

i really wouldl like to know honestly

can i keep bob

or do i have to do him over again

i REALLY dont wanna get on AutoDesk's Bad Side

Wow poor you, thats an issue to have 😞

I can relief your worries:

1. Wherever you got that frank model from, the provider did or did not provide you a license along with it. Its his responsibility to take care of franks licensing agreements with whoever is required. If you arent sure about the legal situation of a model or design, Id rather not redistribute it in any way because then you will be held responsible for any issues.

2. If there is no element of an object that would require some sort of licensing left in your scene, then it doesnt apply. Unless you used frank as a reference for bob and now bob looks very similar to frank to a point where you could argue whether or not the design or parts of it was copied.

Be Happy 🙂

actually i modelled frank in a Student version of Maya

i know im probly making a fuss over nothing

i just really dont wanna get on AutoDesks Bad Side

see being sued into the stone ages

and permanant ban from AutoDesk Programs

Is a VERY Scary thought for me

im having a heart attack just thinking about it

i really love maya but i dont possess a commercial licence so i know i cant use it commercial so for now im stuck with blender

im just hoping that the fact a maya model was present wont render the rest of my blender project commercially unusable

so yeah frank was modelled in a student version of maya by me

sooo i wanna make sure frank's presence in the blender file wont make bob commercially unusable

and no Frank wasnt really a reference for looks

more just size.

I've also included a link to our Education Community License FAQ for your convenience.

Can I use free Educational licenses for Autodesk software obtained through the Education Community for commercial purposes? No. Software and cloud-based services provided without charge to Education Community members may be used solely for purposes directly related to learning, training, research or development. Such software and cloud-based services shall not be used for commercial, professional or any other for-profit purposes.

In your case, Frank should be no where near Bob, even if Frank is just stopping by for a quick drink or is in an entirely different room for that matter.

That being said, I would urge you to look into our affordable Maya Desktop Subscription plans which allow you to rent the license on an as needed basis.

Small infractions usually involve just a "cease and desist" order and a financial penalty if there was significant money involved.  If you persist, are *very* uncooperative, etc. then you will see the larger sanctions.

And seconded on the Desktop Subscription licenses - they are designed to support short-term, low investment work like this.
