I am beginning my learning journey with Maya. I initially setup Maya 2018 a while back and have come back to things just recently with Maya 2020.
When I set up the project I'm working on, I set up reference images (car blueprints) in 4 orthographic views. I then hid them in the perspective view. I don't recall exactly how I did this however I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find the answer for with Google or thses forums. I hope you can assist me.
Q1. How can I show/hide the reference images/planes in the perspective view?
Q2. How can I show the image plane/ref image when I am working on object(s) in an isolated view (using [ctrl]+[1])?
Question 2 is the one that's most important to me as I would like to isolate objects/parts and work on them however as soon as I do this the reference image dissapears! I'd like to isolate the object(s) and keep the ref image visible.

Use the Outliner to select all objects you want to show or hide (including image planes) by using Hotkey "H" or Isolate Select.

I worked it out. Well, part of the solution.
I realised that the image planes were set to “Reference” in a display layer. This meant that I could not select them, as I had intended it to be for obvious reasons. However this also meant that they were not included in my isolated view.
the solution is to set the display layer to allow the image plane to be selected. Select the object(s) and the image plane and then finally isolate these items. Once you have the isolated items you can then set the image plane back to reference only.
it’s a shame you can’t chose to include image planes in isolated views as this would save a lot of work every time you would like to work in an isolated view.

Display Layers only effects the Viewport (for selection), so my solution with selecting the objects in Outliner even works without changing any settings for Display Layers.
If you want to select somehow locked objects in the Viewport, then of course you need to unlock them first.
