Maya 2017 - Selecting specific set of faces that are the same

So I've been working with Maya for a number of years now, since 2012, and I've always had the difficulty with selecting faces. Specific ones. For example:

I Generate a sphere (20x20 subdivisions)

Then select all the faces, and hit the extrude function.

I change the extrusion by choosing to not have the faces attached, so they extrude as separate "beams".

But instead, I shrink the size of the extrusion and chamfer the vertices.

I want to re-select the faces I just had selected, so I may delete them. How is this possible in Maya? Is it even possible?

Attached are photos of what I am describing.

Thanks!

(In the photo, the selected faces are the ones I wish to select without having to go about selecting them all manually.)

select one of the desired faces and go to:

select > select similar.

you maybe have to play with the similarity tolerance.
