Issue when smoothing after doing extrude

Hi was learning Maya and having an issue. Also thought I should make an account    Anyways iv been modeling fine with no issues really. Then today I go to use Maya and got a problem. Its when smoothing after doing an extrude, it creates like a fin shapes and doesnt get rounded. What im trying todo is simply an extrude. Included an image attachment  so you can see for yourself..

Try to clean your topology, only quads and delete the history.

Can't tell what else is wrong by looking at your picture, we need to see wireframe no 3 key.

Hey Damaggio, Tried doing what you said and still couldn't get it to work. Here are some other images including WireFrame. Also seems I made it work on the other shape.

There are faces on top of each other.

It looks you have already done an extrude on all faces with Keep Faces Together set to "off".
