how to trim Curve in MAYA?

hi, Im a newbie Maya, was trying to get a deep understanding about Curves in MAYA and realize it works differently compared to AUtocad.

In AUtoCad I can trim curves easily by a command called "trim" basically selecting which curve is the "cutter" ( I can assign multiple cutter curves if I want to) and then click on curve segment that I want to trim.

in MAYA I think we have to use 2 tools in order to get the same result. first is IntersectCurve (to find intersection point) and then CutCurve.

when I use IntersectCurve ,I got unexpected result. here is the breakdown of the process =

I prepared 2 curves set in the TOP viewport =

then I set up IntersectionTool as follows=

Then This is the result  that I got =

as soon as I finish the command, it creates 2 Locators (I wonder why 2?) and they are located in random empty space. I wonder if I set the tool wrong or I am actually using the wrong tool?

can someone explain to me? thank youuu

🙂

Hi, thank you for the reply. So detaching edge is better for trimming operation than cut edges? May i ask How do I snap curve point to an intersection point? (As far as i know, curve point cannot snap to anything, we just eyeball curve point along the curve segment)

Thanks 🙂

hi, I tried to snap it while pressing "C" it doesnt work. I think "snap" function only works when you are on translate mode (move). while draging a curve point along curve doesn't allow me to snap it to anywhere :((

how to get around that?

I am a frequent Maya user and real world designer. As much as I love Maya, there is no easy, user friendly, or feasible way to trim any curve to any other curve in this program. I work for Disney and have spent HOURS trying to find some way to execute this ridiculously simple command in a timely way, but the time it takes to do so means it isn't the program for that. I recommend Rhino for precision modeling with curves and lines, and Maya for organic poly modeling. Might wanna bring your linework in  from a cad program of choice, because Maya does not even have a  command for drawing a straight line (and that in and of itself shows a lot). It was clearly not developed for that purpose - though they throw that toolbar in to say they have it. I truly hope they at least at implement a polyline tool at some point so I don't have to keep importing items in from other programs and doing geometry surgery to fix them.
