Help with Selecting Verts / Edges / Faces

When I am in edit mode and select either faces, verticies, or edges, the opposite face/vert/edge is also selected. But only sometimes.

I'm very new to Maya, so I probably flipped a switch somewhere, I just don't know what. Thanks in advance.

There are a couple of reasons why opposite faces/vertices get selected.  Make sure you have symmetry turned off by double-clicking on the select tool icon (the arrow in the toolbar on the left) and under Symmetry make sure it is set to off.

The other possible reason is that you are marquee selecting your faces/verts by holding down the mouse button and drag-selecting.  That will select opposite elements.

To avoid that you can use the paintbrush select tool, especially if you have a bunch of faces or verts to select. You can also turn on camera-based selection in the select tool settings if you don't want to use paintbrush select.
