Difficulty UV mapping when importing .obj from Blender

Hello,

I am trying to UV-map a mesh by doing the following:

1) Panels > Saved Layouts > Persp/UV Texture Editor
2) Select object, RMB > Assign new material > Lambert
3) Attributes Editor > Common Material Attributes > Color > Map button > Checkered

When I do this with a default Maya sphere, it works just fine.

However when I attempt this with a mesh that I have imported from Blender, it no longer works (it turns white instead of checkered textured).

I was wondering what the problem might be.

Thank you.

Ah, solved the problem. It was missing a UV set.

Solution:
1) Select Object
2) From menu, Create UVs > Automatic Mapping

The automatic mapping will be fine for a solid color - but if you plan to replace your checker with a texture map - some cleanup will likely be required of the UV map as you will have many separate seams in the UV map.
