Dark Poly cube

Hey there guys,

I am a beginner and currently, this problem has put my morale down.

I was trying to model the interior of a room and I started off with the basic stuff first, but when I came to the room;

I mean, just a regular poly cube, the Inside of the Poly Cube is Dark, I can't see anything else but the modelled components.

Basically, I can't see the walls at all in the Perspective view by going inside the cube but the cube itself shows on the outside.

It comes normally in the render but I have no idea why is it behaving this way.

My processor is I-3 so, it should be okay.

Here is the screen shot of my problem.

Please help me with this Smiley Sad

Hello Xannav! I am a beginner as well, but this is a fairly easy problem to solve! I actually had this exact same problem when I started XD

  • Basically, every polygon has one side only. The back side will show the exact same as the front. Because of this, Maya will show the back side as black, and the front as gray. To reverse what is concidered "font" and "back", simply select your object, click on the normals menu, then reverse normals.
  • If you don't care about what's front and back, you can go to lighting (above the perspective view) and turn on two-sided lighting
  • If you want both sides to have different textures, it is my understanding that you must extrude the polygon.

Hope this was helpful!

Hey Cole,

Thank you so much for your valuable and quick response.

Basically, If I use separate cubes, for the walls and the ceiling, it works
fine but if I have to enclose the scene using a single polygon, for
example, if I use a sphere for environmental purposes, I can't see the
faces, inside of that sphere, it's all dark (The Default Grey Lambert, is
not seen ) in the viewport. but when I render it out, I can see everything
else that I have modeled, except the enclosing polygon, (Sphere, in this
case.)

But I will try to do what you have suggested.

Thank you so much for help Cole, I hope, next time I will message you to
tell you that it worked 🙂

You have a great day Friend 🙂

Hey Cole,

Thanks, your suggestion helped.

It was a TWO SIDED LIGHTING Issue.

So thank you so much once again. Happy Animating 🙂

Navdeep

No problem. Glad I could help! Smiley Happy

Beginning in Maya is difficult, and there are many problems like this that have taken me way too long to figure out.

I hope you stick with it though and continue modeling!
