Combining objects, must I merge vertices/edges?

Hi, I am new to Maya and I am creating a 3D object of pic attached nail_bomb___the_last_of_us_by_nerdbutpro-d7gk9qi.jpg

I have a can obj, half a scissor obj, and nail objs. Now, I've added them to the appropriate place on the can and selected them all and did Mesh<Combine. Is this a valid way of creating it as ONE object or must I merge vertices and all that jazz? I just feel I'm missing something... like it shouldn't be this easy.

That's perfectly fine, no need to merge any vertices , it would be very time consuming to do that.
