Cannot select objects

Cannot select objects

I am having a problem with maya 2010 Educational version.
I can create objects. Once created, if I click off of the object, I cannot select it again. No matter which tool I pick, select, move, scale, etc., nothing happens when I click on the object. When I click and drag a box around the object, nothing happens.
Am I just being dense? What am I doing wrong?
Or, is there a technical issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like a technical issue - try deleting your preferences (search google for how to do this, I don't remember all the file structures by heart)

Sometimes Maya is a little slow to update changes to the User Interface; after you marquee select (drawing the selection box) try using your mouse's scroll wheel if you have one to dolly the camera in and out; sometimes the object is selected, but Maya doesn't turn the mesh green to indicate such a change.

Thanks for the reply.
Tried deleting preferences.
No difference.
Tried the mouse wheel.
The object is simply not selected.
I can select in outliner, but the selection tool does not work.

It seems you are in component mode, to switch between component mode you need to press F8, if done correctly your mesh should turn into vertice mode.
Now what you need to do is click F8 again to switch into object mode and located at the top of the maya interface are little images, such as a picture of a joint, a cross, etc. There all aligned in a horizontal mannor, there is an image of a geometry mesh, you need to make sure that is active.
To do so simply click on it once, and to deactivate it (make it untouchable) click on it again.

Let me know what happened.

Sorry, I did not check the post for a while.

I was talking with an instructor at the local community college who teaches Maya. He suggested that I should check that my video card driver was up to date. I tried it and now the problem is gone.

I am using an ATI Radeon HD5970 with Windows 7. It works fine now.

I'm a little late just reading this one...

I've done this a million times and was a long time figuring it out. What happens is that I have some sort of selection and mistakingy hit another key and then I can never change my sub-level selection.

The key I hit is the space bar. It locks the selection so no matter if you switch sub-level objects you can never select anything. You should see a lock high-lighted down by your reference coordinates.

To unlock, just hit space bar again. Trust me, I've gone through hit lots of other keys but never the space bar again.

Sorry I just noticed this,

Ted.
