Can only select verts on my object's cage, not on the subdivision preview

So generally I put my objects on subdivision preview (hotkey 3) and work on them from there, moving verts and edges with the move/rotate tool and soft select until I need to actually apply the subdivisions.

However now when I select a vertex on subdivision preview, the gizmo for the move tool goes to where the vertex actually is on the non-divided object (or cage). This makes it really annoying and inconvenient to move verts around, as the gizmo is far from the vert I want to move on the subdivided model.

I know I probably hit the wrong hotkey somewhere or switched something on by accident, but I can't figure out what. I'm so certain that it wasn't always this way.

that´s the normal behavior. it´s just more obvious the less subdivisions your base mesh has. if you need to counter that amount of stretching you probably should consider more subdivisions in your base mesh.

I see. I guess I only noticed when I switched to a more simple model. Thanks for your help.
