Boolean Difference Problem <3

Hi.
3D modelling outside Zb....pencil, might suck if you are learning everything by yourself and YouTube videos are NOT enough, cuz they miss telling you some basic fundamentals. I'm watching videos how to cut some FORM into an object -> Boolean Difference...right? Okay. I've spent 5 hours making my model and after every B->D I used Mesh-> Triangulate and then Mesh->Quadrangulate to make sure I don't have any 4+ vertex faces. All good, saved the file, opened it a few hours later and OH.MY.GOD...it's ruined. Half of it is destroyed. That's great and all, but...why do you have a feature like B->D if it ruins everything and is not good for 99.9% of the time? Why Triangulate -> Quadrangulate is not enough to fix the dmg? How many more hours I will sink into this god forsaken software and leave with sh*t?
Relying only on youtube for 3D modelling is a HELL I don't recommend to anybody.

Okay let me give you an example, cuz I'll tear out the little hair I have left on my head...
So...how will you make a perfect rectangle AROUND those 2 pink buttons so you can then extrude it down and make a ... I don't know the word, just extrude it after?!

With simple geometry as this is better to try work without boolean as well as to convert the topology to tris and back to quads can be messy and is not neccesary in this I would say. I would just prepare edges according to schapes and tilt them as you wish as in Picture. Its a fast Picture so the topology isnt clean, but you can get the idea from that. I also learned that there are two cool thing how to clean booleans that I found few day ago.

First of all...THANK You very much kind Sir! Those 2 videos will help me out BIG time. I really think (and hope) this will solve my problems! I'm yet to find out all the amazing tips and tricks and workarounds of the software and I thank you very much!

About the picture...I made a quick video showing you how I tried to do it...and it was all good until the moment I tried to transform the rectangle. It was not keeping its shape...it was kinda SKEWING the shape and I don't know why. It's not important anymore cuz you showed me how to do this with booleans, but anyway...I would like to know why it happened. I tried the same thing on a cube and it transformed as expected.

Edit: by the way, you can see the old model on the left. I don't know why some models turn out like this. I work on them, I save the file and when I reopen it...it's all messed up. I think it's because of the incorrect usage of the boolean. Now, after you showed me those videos, I think I'll be all good and no more problems!

🙂 happy to help, those two little functions in the videos, helped me a lot as well. I was amazed that something like that is quiet hidden in the Maya. Video of yours does not work, cant watch that.

I made it private, I guess it should've been Unlisted, try again =D

😄 ok, so first, component mean that you scale each object by itelf, so if you would have two cubes they would enlarge independently on each other. With edge it will work only in one direction as the edge does not have other dimension. So in this case you can use just world (orientation of the scene) or object (orientation of the object depending how you move with it) You scaled the polygon too much so it went over the object.. Component mode should work for the polygon to scale. Also make the edges over the whole model, not just on the one half, you will have some problems when you will be adding edges for smoothing Its a questions of time and experience to know what you will need to make the shape you want… But If boolean works for you, go with that 🙂
