Black geometry

Hi

I seem to have an issue with my model. When I did my model I merged two models (up and down) and thus got some overlap between the models. Any easy way to get those black overlap spots off my model in Maya?

You could try and grab the verts and merge them with a very high threshold.

Outside of Maya you could bring it into ZBrush and using Dynamesh to fill in the holes.

When you say very high threshold what do you then mean? I have to say I am no expert in Maya what so ever, so you have to tell me in more detail.

In addition, I have never used ZBrush or Dynamesh. I merged my models using Cloudcompare if that helps you helping me 🙂

Thanks.

Hi,

Yeah sure thing.

So when you select your verts and go to ....edit mesh>Merge. You'll be given an option of threshold with a pop up menu and an input on the right hand side under your channel box.

(See my linked image)

The higher you set this the more verts are affected and the further distance verts will be affected.

However, this way will probably have some unwanted results as it will just pull all your verts to one sharp point. This is why I suggested ZBrush, I don't know anything about Cloudcompare, sorry. In Zbrush you can close holes very handily using a feature called dynamesh.

Oh by the way are they holes in your mesh or just black polygons.

If you want, you can send me your file and I'll have a look at it for you.

Thanks for the tip. However, the black "spots" in my models are only black polygons from overlap and not actual holes.

I tried to attach the file but it will not allow me to attach maya-files (.ma), so I attached a zip with it instead. Thanks again for your help. I really hope you can help me on this one, as I haven't been able to find anything useful via youtube or direct google search.

Hi!

Your object has some black parts because it shows the inner part of the mesh surface (just flat polygons).

You can get rid of the black display by using in Viewport Menu: Lighting -> Two Sided Lighting.

Two get rid of the Polygons:

1. right mouse click on the Mesh, in the upcoming menu select "Face"

2. select the unwanted faces

3. hit delete

Hi,

Sorry been quite busy.

Yeah so It's just very messy geometry. Since you combined two different meshes together it's just created a lot of single polygons sticking out all around your mesh.

mspeer is right in saying turn on two sided lighting. And also just selecting the polygons you don't want and hitting delete. However that will take ages looking at you mesh.

I would suggest starting again and trying to combine them a bit better.

Also your mesh has some ngons just to let you know.

I'll forward on a cleaner mesh if I'm able to do it.

Good luck,

Keith
