Automatic Mesh from Image Plane

Hey! So I was using Maya with a picture of headphones on an image plane.

I set my cube over one of the ear covers in wireframe (keypad 4).

Then I accidentally pressed Keypad 3 and the cube was in the shape of the ear cover on my image plane.

However I CANNOT replicate this again, nor am I able to find any information on how this is done.

Any help at all would be amazing because I know I didn't image this. It was one of those game changer moments that seems like a glitch in the matrix smh.

Thank you!

No I'm actually not. I've only been using MAYA a couple weeks. I've seen the videos on making a 3d mesh from a 2d image but this wasn't the same. I hit some button combo by accident and my cube was in the shape of my headphone ear cup image. I had the cube lined up against it to start modeling when it happened. Sorry I'm honestly just a newb.

Hi!

Something similar happend to me when I first started using Maya.

What happend to you was shear coincidence, you most likely hit the button for smooth mesh preview (3) and your cube, which probably had some more geo/cuts on the flat side of the headphones, smoothed itself into the shape of the headphone earcup since those look roughly like a half sphere. To a beginner this can look like Maya knows what you intend to do, but I can assure you, it doesn't

There sadly is no such miracle tool in Maya as of this date.

I hope it helps!

In this case sorry.

Like mentioned above you used the shortcut 3 for smooth preview.

Hey thanks for the reply! I've done that before and got the weird oval shape, and you're probably right. I'll attach a Pic of the headphones (I just rolled with it). However strange though if you notice the shape of the phones it's abit different then the egg shape I've gotten before with the smooth. But I guess it probably was some weird fluke lol darn
