Very simple problem! Can't add edge loop

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to Maya and having trouble adding lines to divide up my plane with the edge loop tool.

I managed to add one and then I've messed around trying to fix a problem with extruding, now when I try to use the edge loop tool it selects an area of the edge rather than split where I click. I can drag a green dot a long the edge I click but nothing happen

s when I let go.

I'm sure its an easy fix, thank you in advance!

Hello, if you hold right-click on the model and switch to Vertex . Then look for any floating or extra vertices ! If you extruded and something went weird, you might have stacked geometry.  It looks like there is a segment in that line probably in the center.  The greatest tool is the Heads up display. Turn on for polycount that way if you box select a vert and there are more than one stacked, the heads up display will tell you how many you have selected. The poly count HUD should now appear in the main viewport 😁 (screen capture included below where to turn on). Good Luck!
