Unfolding UV's

Hi everyone,
I am running into some issues with UV mapping in maya. I am basically trying to take the mesh shown in the lefthand side, unwrap properly. What is shown in the righthand side is a simple Normal-Based unwrapping.
I was able to accomplish this in a different software and got this result.
Does anybody have any suggestions? This seems like a pretty straightforward thing to do but I'm not sure what is going on.
