Strange problem during extrude polygons

Hello everyone:)

At first please excuse me for my english:)

I have strange error/issue with Maya, during extrude 3D model. I have Iron Man mask model from pepakura design program. Important issue is very low model resolution and no thickness. I wish to print this mask in 3D printer (my friend have 3d printer). I can change resolution, using "Smooth" option. Next step is add thickness to the model. I use option "Extrude" and change thickness parameter from 0 to for eg. 1 mm. After this i have strange situation (please see picture below). Is there anyone who can help me with this problem? Thank You in advance.

Sure, attach the model file and I'll try to throw an extrude on there for ya Cat Very Happy

The forum doesn't let you directly attach Maya files, so you'll have to .zip it up first.

Because of the indents in the middle and side of his eyes you won't be able to get an easy extrude and be done solution. Those sections will take some extra time to get right.

Main thing you should do is to clean up the model. The topology will be hard to work with the way it is. For example if you notice at the top of the mask in the middle it has verts that are all bunched up and intersecting, which is why you get spikes up there when you try to add thickness.

I attached a Maya file of where I did a quick example to get you started with cleaning it up. Just add edge loops where needed and move them to match the original mask. Once you roughly match the shape you can do a smooth, add the indents, and then do your work with extruding the thickness. You'll have to mess with the indent sections to get those to look right. Then you can mirror it over once you finish one side.
