Split object with big texture map to separate objects each with smaller texture

I have an object with a very large texture map (for print) - thing is I need to load the object in to another program for some additional processing but it doesn't support such a large texture map. The object is UV mapped and uses the 0-1 area of the UV texture space - ie: nothing special about how it is UV'd.
What I'm trying to do is split the object up, and split the texture image up - such that each of the separate pieces of the model each have their own texture map that also each use the full 0-1 area of the UV space.
I tried using UDIMs - I scaled the UV's up to fill 4 quadrants (0-2) and split the texture in the the same 4 quadrants. I then have 4 texture maps but the object is still one object - and since some polys cross the boundary between UDIMs there's no way to cut it such that each fits its own UDIM quadrant.
Hopefully I'm explaining this ok - anyone have any ideas?
