Smooth Mesh Creates Suboptimal Topology

On edges close to each other, Maya's smooth mesh algorithm seems to have issues creating sensible topology. Below are images comparing the same model smoothed in Maya vs. Blender. Initially, I had assumed this was an issue with scale, but the smoothed mesh in these screenshots are both to correct scale. It appears that Blender just has a superior smoothing algorithm unless I am missing something?

Maya: Note how the edges are overlapping and the faces are folding in on themselves.

Blender: Note how the edges are spaced apart and sensible.

Your geometry isnt clean. Fix the internal stuff.

Bad geo does create a lot of troubles later on in the pipeline.

I see, perhaps my control edges are too close together?
