Restrict component selection to the selected object

Until now I've never had to press F8 to switch to component mode to restrict selecting components to the selected object. I seem to remember (I think) a preference that enabled this, but I can't seem to locate it in Maya 2024. If I have two objects, one behind the other, and select the front object and then go to vertex in the marking menu, a marquee selection of some verts on the front object also selects the object behind. I know I can hit F8 to restrict the component selection to the front object, but Ive never had to do that before. What am I missing?

Maybe you have changed your preferences by mistake, by default Maya does not select an object behind in component mode.

Try with fresh prefs.

Hmmm…if I have changed my preferences, which one might I have changed to result in the behavior I described? That's really the basis of my question. I seem to recall there is such a preference setting but I'm at a loss to find it.

take a screen grab of your current Selection preferences and compare to the default ones to see what you might have changed.

Thank you. I see what I inadvertently changed.
