Problem with Vertices and Edges in Smooth Preview after Merge

Hi everyone,

I'm a complete beginner in both modeling and Maya so please be patient with me.

I came across a problem, where when I went into smooth mode, some vertices and edges were a bit erratic compared to the non-smoothed mode. I have provided some screenshots below.

Could anyone tell me how to fix this? (This problem really seems to come up every time I model something)After Smooth Preview.pngBefore Smooth Preview.png

I would be really thankful for any kind fo help!!

Hi!

You have faces "inside" the object, or more technical, some of your edges are connected to more than 2 faces.

That's also the reason why OpenSubdiv currently cannot be used for Smooth Mesh Preview.

Correct this and everything will work fine (the same for the earpiece below).

Thank you! I see the error now.

Really sorry for being such a noob, but I can't delete the extra edge inside. Cntrl+Del works for other edges but not this one. Do you know why?

Hi!

You can't delete the edges only (too much dependencies here).

You need to use face selection mode and then select and delete the faces.

(The topmost face needs to be deleted twice, 2 faces one top of each other).

Thanks. This solved the problem with the erratic vertices. But now that I've done that, this weird line formed, even though the vertices are all in array. Could anyone please tell me the reason??Screen Shot 2018-07-22 at 6.50.07 PM.png

Hi!

There is no problem with vertices,

you have unnecessary/bad faces INSIDE your object and you need to delete ALL these faces.

Because there are several faces on top of each other, make sure to select and delete ALL of them.

Please check again if there are still faces inside.

This is your object "opened" by deleting front faces, so you maybe better see what's "inside".

(Use: Show -> Isolate Select -> View Selected, for easier accessing parts of an object.

For further help please upload the new file.
