Problem with extruding faces

I am a newbie to Maya and I am following a tutorial that calls for me to extrude certain faces on a polygon sphere. I right click the sphere, select faces from the menu, clicked on Edit Mesh-Extrude and it extrudes the vertices. No matter what I do I can't get it to extrude the faces. I know I am missing something, just can't figure out what it is.

I posted a video of the steps I took, but the screencast did not record me right click choosing Face and Extrude, but the end result you can see.

make sure you are in the right section of the edit mesh menu.
without seeing what you are actually clicking on it´s just a guess and i don´t have 2015 installed (any reasons for not using a more current version?) but if i remember there was a time when there were multiple extrudes. the menu is separated in components / vertex /edge etc. make sure to use the face extrude (in more current versions that´s unified into just 1 extrude command for components).
