Post-sculpting mode and smooth preview turns model white

I've recently been experiencing this really weird problem where, once I finish sculpting in maya on a mesh, exit the sculpt tool then enter in smooth preview mode, the mesh turns completely white (attached some photos). Putting it back into the rough quality display turns it back to the original grey lambert material. The hypergraph also reports the original material is still there and there's no evidence of the white skin anywhere. It's never happened before and I have no idea why it's starting now...

It's not too big of a deal but it is just a little bit annoying not being able to see the grid texture I've applied to it (I'm UV mapping right now) and I was hoping anyone can help me with a quick fix and explanation hopefully...

Thank you!
