Overlapping vertices? Please help!

Hello!

Recently I began using Maya for the first time, and in each of the small projects I've undertaken since then, I've run into the same problem. As I work on my meshes, I begin to notice that my poly count is way higher than it should be, and when I am following tutorials it is always higher than the examples shown. It then comes to light a little later in the project that I end up having tons of vertices in the same location on top of each other, explaining the very high poly count (as they are all connected) and severely hindering my ability to continue working on the project.

I suspect this has something to do with using the multi-cut and insert edge loop tools while utilizing object symmetry, however even if this is correct, I really have no idea how to avoid it in the future (surely I can avoid this without just turning off symmetry)

Please help! I am very eager to learn but this is kind of preventing me from getting past the initial stages in any project I try to do.

Thanks!

I too am a novice using Maya 2015 in a class and have run across the same thing.

My instructor taught me a trick to quickly fix this.  The trick is to highlight the object in OBJECT mode, choose vertex , choose all the vertex in the model, shift right click on the mouse and choose MERGE VERTEX and in the option choose a very small number like 0.001 and then merge.

What this will do is automatically merge ALL the vertex in model that is the very small distance away from each other.  Watch your vertex count and it will drop dramatically...

this may sounds silly but i bet its from starting an extrude and not actually pulling the faces away. that way you have two faces on top of one another.
