Hi, I'm pretty new to Maya and I'm having a problem, I want to engrave (booleans-difference) a polygon into another but it's not working and creates a whole mess, maybe it's a simple problem but as I said I'm new, can anyone help? thanks in advance

Here's the pics, I want to engrave the bell-looking shape with the rectangle, in the 2nd pic you can see it just becomes a mess and is not working

This doesn't need any Boolean , you just need to learn 3D modeling the right way if you are really interested in 3D .

That's my best advice.

You should be able to learn this quickly and save the boolean tool for more complex modeling tasks.

I think the problem is that the polygon I want engraved has inside out normals, but they only show when it's on 2 or more divisions, it looks ok while it's on 1 divisions. Is there a way to fix it or another way to engrave besides boolean?

As I said, I'm new and trying to learn, pic attached.

There's a lot of beginners tutorials on Autodesk learning channels Will, maybe you should start there, also you tube has

some great free videos of basic modeling tips.

Best of luck.

Hi!

The problem is not the Boolean operation.

Just disable Smooth Mesh Preview on pCube1 and it looks the same,

or enable Smooth Mesh Preview of your result mesh after using Boolean Difference.

Hi, thanks,

I think i've kinda figured it out, the black things only come out in non-smooth mode (pressing 1) while they do not on smooth mode (pressing 3), but I have the same problem anyway, this is what happens when I re-smooth it after booleans-difference: https://imgur.com/wGewZhR - https://imgur.com/TUjfNHi

Another example, if I try to engrave something like this: https://imgur.com/d5lkffQ

this is the result: https://imgur.com/fyiG3pw - https://imgur.com/Gnpb2XF

Hi!

"...black things..."

These are not black things, this is part of your mesh.
Please learn more about what Smooth Mesh Preview does.

Also smooth Mesh Preview requires proper topology (an even distribution of quads), which you can't get by Booleans.

So as @damaggio  suggested you have to look for an other solution and learn more about modeling.

Either create the object manual or correct the result of your Boolean operation.

However, Booleans -> Difference itself works correct.
