Maya material color wont show in viewport

Hey all,

I am having a problem with materials in maya - hope this is the right place to post. I am working with a simple body mechanics rig that only has a material - no texture. It's just a solid color. However, it wont show up in the viewport. I do have textures on. I'm using maya 2019 rn, but I had the same issue when I opened the rig in 2018. Anyone know what might be the problem?

Thanks!

What kind of material are you using?

Does it work with a simple lambert shader?

Go to the Shading menu at the top of the viewport and make sure "Use default material" isn't checked.

Unchecking "Use default material" did it for me.  I tried every other article and that wasn't mentioned anywhere.  Thanks!!
